Scrimshaw
Scrimshaw was historically a maritime craft in the 19th century practiced by sailors during long voyages, particularly on whaling ships. Traditional scrimshaw art was a form of engraving or carving typically done on bone or ivory.
Today, scrimshaw art continues as a beloved tradition and craft, with a shift towards sustainability and ethical sourcing of materials such as found antler, bone, horn, recycled antique ivory or fossilized mammoth tusk. This change in material use is essential for conservation efforts and to protect endangered species, and are the sources for Ginny’s art.
While still honouring the intricate techniques and motifs of traditional scrimshaw, today's artists also infuse their work with innovative designs and styles, showcasing the enduring appeal and adaptability of this historic art form in the 21st century.
